✧ I came to Madinah, and a man brought me to the daughter of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas ؓ, and she narrated to me the story of Thabit... Then she mentioned the hadith... She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Rather, you will live a praiseworthy life, be killed as a martyr, and Allah will admit you to Paradise." When the day of Yamamah came, he went out with Khalid ibn al-Walid ؓ to Musaylimah the Liar. He said: When he met the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and attacked them, they were routed. He said: He said to Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah ؓ: "This is not how we used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Then each of them dug a pit, and the people attacked them. They kept fighting until they were killed, may Allah have mercy on them. Thabit ؓ had a precious coat of mail, and a Muslim man passed by him and took it. While a Muslim man was sleeping, Thabit ibn Qays ؓ came to him in his dream and said: "I enjoin upon you a bequest: beware of saying, 'This is a dream,' and neglecting it. When I was killed yesterday, a Muslim man passed by me and took my coat of mail. His dwelling is at the far end of the army, and by his tent is a horse prancing in its tether. He has placed a cooking pot over the coat of mail and put a saddle on top of the pot. Go to Khalid ibn al-Walid ؓ and tell him to send for my coat of mail and take it. When you come to the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, inform him that I owe such-and-such a debt, and I am owed such-and-such a debt. So-and-so, my slave, is free, and so-and-so. Beware of saying, 'This is a dream,' and neglecting it." The man went to Khalid ibn al-Walid ؓ and informed him, so he sent for the coat of mail. He looked at a tent at the far end of the army, and there was a horse prancing in its tether. He looked in the tent and found no one there. They entered, lifted the saddle, and beneath it was a cooking pot. They lifted it, and the coat of mail was under it. It was brought to Khalid ibn al-Walid ؓ. When he came to Madinah, the man told Abu Bakr ؓ of his dream, and he executed his bequest after his death. We do not know of any Muslim whose bequest was executed after his death except Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas ؓ.
