✧ When Amr b. al-As ؓ was near death, he became intensely distressed and began to weep. His son said to him: “Why are you so distressed, when the Messenger of God ﷺ used to appoint you and draw you near?” He said: “He ﷺ used to do that, but I do not know whether he loved me or was simply trying to win me over. However, I bear witness to two men whom the Messenger of God ﷺ died loving: the son of Sumayya, meaning Ammar, and Ibn Mas’ud ؓ.” When his death throes intensified—meaning the final agony—he clasped his hands and placed them at his neck like a collar, saying: “O God, You commanded us and we neglected, You forbade us and we transgressed. Nothing can save us except Your mercy.” He kept repeating this until he died.
