✧ ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ became severely distressed at the time of death. When his son ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr saw that, he said: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, what is this distress? The Messenger of God ﷺ used to draw you near and appoint you to positions of authority. He said: O my son, that is true, and I will tell you about it. By God, I do not know whether that was out of love or out of winning my heart (taʾalluf). But I bear witness regarding two men that he departed this world while he loved them: Ibn Sumayya and Ibn Umm ʿAbd. When he had told him that, he placed his hand on the place of the collarbones at his chin and said: O God, You commanded us and we neglected; You forbade us and we committed. Nothing can encompass us except Your forgiveness. And that remained his constant refrain until he died.
