وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ: حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنٌ، ثَنَا أَبُو عَمْرٍو الْقَارِئُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، قَالَ:

قُلْتُ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ: إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ؓ يَقْرَأُ: ( وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَغَلَّ ) بِفَتْحِ الْغَيْنِ، فَقَالَ لِي: قَدْ جَازَ لَهُ أَنْ يَغَلَّ وَأَنْ ( يَقْتُلَ )، إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَنْ يَغُلَّ ( يَعْنِي ) بِضَمِّ الْغَيْنِ وَمَا كَانَ اللهُ ( عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ) لِيَجْعَلَ نَبِيًّا غَالًّا

Translation

✧ I said to Ibn Abbas ؓ: Ibn Masud ؓ recites (And it is not for a prophet to yaghalla) with a fathah on the ghayn. He said to me: It would be permissible for him to yaghalla and to (kill), but it is yaghulla (meaning) with a dammah on the ghayn: And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) would not make a prophet a defrauder.
