✧ The Prohibition of Excessiveness in Religion

قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي أُسَامَةَ: أَحَدَّثَكُمْ مِسْعَرٌ قَالَ: أَخْرَجَ إِلَيَّ مَعْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ كِتَابًا فَحَلَفَ لِي أَنَّهُ خَطُّ أَبِيهِ، فَإِذَا فِيهِ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ:

وَالَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُهُ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا كَانَ أَشَدَّ خَوْفًا عَلَى الْمُتَنَطِّعِينَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، وَلَا بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ أَشَدَّ خَوْفًا مِنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ، وَإِنِّي لَأَرَى عُمَرَ ؓ كَانَ أَشَدَّ خَوْفًا عَلَيْهِمْ أَوْ لَهُمْ

✧ «By Him besides whom there is no god, I have not seen anyone who was more fearful for the extremists than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ there was none who was more fearful than Abu Bakr ؓ. And indeed I see that Umar ؓ was more fearful for them or of them.»
