وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ دُكَيْنٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ قَالَ:
حَمَلَنِي عَلِيٌّ ؓ خَلْفَهُ ثُمَّ سَارَ بِي فِي جَبَّانَةٍ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُكَ، ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ ؓ إِلَيَّ فَضَحِكَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، اسْتِغْفَارُكَ رَبَّكَ وَالْتِفَاتُكَ إِلَيَّ تَضْحَكُ ؟ قَالَ ؓ: جَعَلَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَلْفَهُ ثُمَّ سَارَ بِي فِي جَانِبِ الْحَرَّةِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: « اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُكَ ». ثُمَّ الْتَفَتَ ﷺ إِلَيَّ فَضَحِكَ فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، اسْتِغْفَارُكَ رَبَّكَ وَالْتِفَاتُكَ إِلَيَّ تَضْحَكُ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: « ضَحِكْتُ لِضَحِكِ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِعَجَبِهِ لِعَبْدِهِ أَنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُهُ
Translation

✧ ʿAli ؓ mounted me behind him, then he rode with me into a cemetery, then he raised his head to the sky and said: “O Allah, forgive me my sins; none forgives sins except You.” Then he turned to me ؓ and smiled. I said: “O Commander of the Faithful, you seek forgiveness from your Lord and then turn to me smiling?” He said ؓ: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted me behind him, then he rode with me to the side of the Ḥarrah, then he raised his head to the sky and said: ‘O Allah, forgive me my sins; none forgives sins except You.’ Then he turned to me ﷺ and smiled. I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, you seek forgiveness from your Lord and then turn to me smiling?’ He ﷺ said: ‘I smiled because my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, smiled in amazement at His servant, knowing that none forgives sins except Him.’”
