✧ The way of life of the predecessors

وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ فِي الزُّهْدِ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي بُكَيْرٍ، ثَنَا مَهْدِيٌّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ:

أَعْرَسَ ابْنُ أُخْتٍ لَنَا فَصَنَعَ طَعَامًا، فَقَالَ ابْنُ سِيرِينَ: كَانَ الرَّجُلُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَمْكُثُ أَيَّامًا لَا يَأْكُلُ، فَإِذَا وَجَدَ جِلْدَةً اجْتَزَأَ بِهَا، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ عَصَبَ عَلَى بَطْنِهِ حَجَرًا

Translation

✧ A nephew of ours married and he made food. Ibn Sirin said: A man among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would remain for days without eating. If he found a hide, he would be content with it; if he did not find one, he would tie a stone to his stomach.
