✧ Dislike of Naming After Tyrants and Changing the Name to Something Better

وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ: حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ، ثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ؓ:

إِنَّ أَمَةً لِعُمَرَ ؓ كَانَ لَهَا اسْمٌ مِنْ أَسْمَاءِ الْعَجَمِ، فَسَمَّاهَا عُمَرُ ؓ جَمِيلَةَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهَا: أَنْتِ جَمِيلَةُ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ: خُذِيهَا عَلَى رَغْمِ أَنْفِكِ

Translation

✧ A slave woman belonging to 'Umar ؓ had a name from the Persian names. 'Umar ؓ named her Jamila. 'Umar said: Between me and you is the Prophet ﷺ. So we came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said to her: You are Jamila. 'Umar ؓ said: Take her, in spite of your nose.
