✧ Permissibility of Naming After the Prophets, and What Is Reported Concerning the Dislike of That

قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ: أَخْبَرَنَا وَكِيعٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ:

إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ جَمَعَ كُلَّ غُلَامٍ اسْمُهُ اسْمُ نَبِيٍّ، فَأَدْخَلَهُمْ دَارًا، وَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُغَيِّرَ أَسْمَاءَهُمْ، فَشَهِدَ آبَاؤُهُمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ سَمَّاهُمْ قَالَ: وَكَانَ أَبِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ فِيهِمْ

Translation

✧ Indeed, 'Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ gathered every boy whose name was the name of a prophet, and he brought them into a house and wanted to change their names. Their fathers testified that the Messenger of God ﷺ had named them. He said: My father, Muhammad b. 'Amr b. Hazm, was among them.
