- وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثَنَا طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، ثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْجُوَيْرِيَةِ الْجَرْمِيِّ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجَرْمِيِّ، قَالَ:
كُنْتُ جَالِسًا عِنْدَ عُثْمَانَ ؓ إِذْ جَاءَهُ شَيْخٌ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ الْقَوْمُ قَالُوا: أَبُو ذَرٍّ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ عُثْمَانُ ؓ قَالَ: مَرْحَبًا وَأَهْلًا بِأَخِي [فَقَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ ؓ: مَرْحَبًا وَأَهْلًا بِأَخِي] لَعَمْرِي لَقَدْ غَلَّظْتَ فِي الْعَزْمَةِ، وَايْمُ اللهِ، لَوْ أَنَّكَ عَزَمْتَ أَنْ أَحْبُوَ لَحَبَوْتُ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَنْ أَحْبُوَ ".

✧ I was sitting with 'Uthman ؓ when an old man came. When the people saw him, they said: Abu Dharr. When 'Uthman ؓ saw him, he said: Welcome to my brother, [so Abu Dharr ؓ said: Welcome to my brother]. By my life, you have been harsh in your determination. By Allah, if you had resolved that I should crawl, I would have crawled as much as I could.
