✧ Umar ؓ mounted the pulpit, the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and said: "I shall not acknowledge any increase in dowry above four hundred dirhams." Then he descended. A woman of Quraysh confronted him and said, "O Commander of the Believers, have you forbidden people to increase their women's dowries above four hundred dirhams?" He said, "Yes." She said, "Have you not heard God Almighty say in the Qur'an: 'And you have given one of them a qintar'... the verse?" He said, "O God, forgiveness! All the people are more knowledgeable than Umar." Then he returned, mounted, and said, "O people, I had forbidden you to increase their dowries above four hundred dirhams. Whoever wishes to give from his wealth whatever he likes, or whoever is pleased in himself, let him do so."
