Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar from Abu's-Salih as-Samman that Abu Hurayra used to say, "Anyone who has wealth on which he has not paid zakat will, on the day of rising, find his wealth made to resemble a whiteheaded serpent with a sac of venom in each cheek which will seek him out until it has him in its power, saying, 'I am the wealth that you had hidden away.'
machine translationMālik narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār and made it stop at Abū Hurayrah (mawqūf). ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Mājishūn narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār but differed in the chain, saying in it "from Ibn ʿUmar"; al-Nasāʾī recorded it in this way. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: It is, in my view, an error, and the narration of Mālik and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is the sound (ṣaḥīḥ) one.
in موطأ مالك, p. 547 - Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
machine translationThis hadith is also mawqūf in the Muwaṭṭaʾ, not raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ). ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār also narrated it with a connected chain, from his father, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, with the first chain. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Mājishūn narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ, and in my view that is an error on his part in the chain, and God knows best. This hadith has also been narrated from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, through sound (ṣaḥīḥ) and firmly established chains.
