Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Jabir ibn Atik that Atik ibn al-Harith, the grandfather of Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Jabir on his mother's side, told him that Jabir ibn Atik had told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit Abdullah ibn Thabit and found him in his death-throes. He called to him but he did not reply. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We belong to Allah, and to Him we are returning," and added, "You are being taken from us, Abur-Rabiʿ." The women cried out and wept, and Jabir began to silence them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, and when the necessary time comes, none of the women should cry." They said, "Messenger of Allah, what is the necessary time?" and he replied, "When he dies." The dying man's daughter said, "By Allah, I hope that you will be a martyr, for you have completed your preparations for battle," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has made his reward fall according to his intention. What do you consider dying a martyr to be?" They said, "Death in the way of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are seven kinds of martyr other than those killed in the way of Allah. Someone who is killed by the plague is a martyr, someone who drowns is a martyr, someone who dies of pleurisy is a martyr, someone who dies of a disease of the belly is a martyr, someone who dies by fire is a martyr, someone who dies under a falling building is a martyr and a woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr."

machine translationMālik b. Anas narrates it, and there are differences about it from him. Isḥāq b. Sulaymān al-Rāzī narrated it from Mālik, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, from Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he made a gross error in it, because it is not from the hadith of al-Zuhrī. Rather, Mālik narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, the maternal grandfather of his mother, from Jābir b. ʿAtīk. So the compilers of the Muwaṭṭaʾ and others narrated it from Mālik, except that al-Qaʿnabī did not set its chain right. Al-Wāqidī narrated it from Mālik, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from his maternal uncle, from his father, from his grandfather, and I do not know what he meant by this. Abū ʿUmays narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jabr b. ʿAtīk, and he did not say 'son of Jābir', and said: from his father, from his grandfather. Kathīr b. Zayd narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik b. Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from his paternal uncle, meaning Jabr b. ʿAtīk. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā narrated it and said: from Jabr b. ʿAtīk, from his uncle. Al-Darāwardī narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ayyūb b. Bashīr, as a mursal report from the Prophet ﷺ. Ḥammād b. Zayd narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from Ayyūb b. Bashīr, also as mursal. It was also narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father; this was said by Sulaymān b. Arqam, who is abandoned in hadith (matrūk al-ḥadīth) when narrating from al-Zuhrī. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr narrated it, and there are differences about it from him. Abū ʿAwānah narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik, from a man of the Anṣār whom he did not name, from the Prophet ﷺ. Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd narrated it from Jabr, from the Prophet ﷺ. No one corroborated Mālik in his saying 'Jābir b. ʿAtīk', and God knows best. It is among the things held against Mālik.
