✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ besieged Taif and did not gain anything against them, he said, "We are returning, if Allah wills." This was hard on them, and they said, "Are we to go away without conquering it?" On one occasion he said, "We are returning." So he said, "Go out in the morning to fight." They went out in the morning and sustained wounds, so he said, "We are returning tomorrow, if Allah wills." That pleased them, and the Prophet ﷺ laughed. Sufyan said on one occasion: "Then he smiled." He said: Al-Humaydi said: Sufyan narrated the whole report to us.
