'Ubadah bin Samit narrated to them and said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from selling silver for silver, gold for gold, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, and dates for dates.'I one of them said: "And salt for salt," but the other did not say it. "And he commanded us to sell wheat for barley, or barley for wheat, hand-to-hand, however we wished."

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationMuslim b. Yasār did not hear it from ʿUbādah.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationAuthentic (ṣaḥīḥ), well-known (mashhūr), and preserved (maḥfūẓ) from ʿUbādah with Muʿāwiyah, through various routes and chains.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIt is narrated by al-Rabīʿ b. Ṣubayḥ, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Anṣārī, Ḥajjāj b. Minhāl and others narrated it from al-Rabīʿ, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Anas and ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit. Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh said: from al-Rabīʿ, from al-Ḥasan, from Anas and ʿUbādah. There is also disagreement about Ibn Sīrīn: Salamah b. ʿAlqamah narrated it from Ibn Sīrīn, from Muslim b. Yasār, from ʿUbādah; and ʿUqbah b. Khālid al-Shannī narrated it from Ibn Sīrīn, from Shuraḥbīl b. Ḥasanah, from ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit. The report of Salamah b. ʿAlqamah is closer to being correct.
