What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIn it is Ibn Jurayj from Ḥabīb. In the narration of Abū Dāwūd, via Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad from Ibn Jurayj, he said: "I was informed from Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit." Abū Ḥātim said in al-ʿIlal that the intermediary between the two is al-Ḥasan b. Dhakwān. He said: no narration of Ḥabīb from ʿĀṣim is established. So this is another defect.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationNo narration from ʿĀṣim is established for Ḥabīb, so this is a defect (ʿillah).

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationḤabīb did not hear it from ʿĀṣim, and between the two of them is a man who is not trustworthy (thiqah).

  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translationThis hadith is weakened (ḍaʿīf) because of its defects.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationḤabīb did not hear it from ʿĀṣim, and between the two of them is a man who is not trustworthy (thiqah).

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationIbn Jurayj did not hear this hadith with this chain from Ḥabīb. Rather, it is from the hadith of ʿAmr b. Khālid al-Wāsiṭī, and no narration of Ḥabīb from ʿĀṣim is established. So I think that Ibn Jurayj took it from al-Ḥasan b. Dhakwān, from ʿAmr b. Khālid, from Ḥabīb. Both al-Ḥasan b. Dhakwān and ʿAmr b. Khālid are weak (ḍaʿīf) in hadith.

machine translationThe break in the chain (inqiṭāʿ) is in two places: one between Ibn Jurayj and Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit, and the second between Ḥabīb and ʿĀṣim, for he did not hear it from him.

  • ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Jawzī

machine translationThe soundest of these hadiths is the hadith of ʿAlī and the hadith of Muḥammad b. Jaḥsh.
