"Abu Laila used to travel with 'Ali, and he used to wear summer clothes in winter and winter clothes in summer. We said: 'Why don't you ask him (about that)?' He said: "The Messenger of Allah sent for me and my eyes were sore, on the Day of Khaibar. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my eyes are sore.' He put some spittle into my eyes, then he said: 'O Allah, take heat and cold away from him.' I never felt hot or cold again after that day. He (the Prophet) said: 'I will send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love, and he is not one who flees from the battlefield.' The people craned their necks to see, and he sent for 'Ali and gave it (the banner) to him."

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā narrated it, and there is disagreement about it from him. ʿImrān b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā narrated it from his father, from al-Minhāl b. ʿAmr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā. ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsā narrated it from Ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Ḥakam and al-Minhāl. ʿAlī b. Hāshim narrated it from Ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Ḥakam and al-Minhāl b. ʿAmr, and ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā. ʿAbbād b. Yaʿqūb gave it a connected chain (asnadahu) from ʿAlī b. Hāshim, and said in it: from Ibn Abī Laylā, from his father, from ʿAlī. ʿUbaydullāh b. Mūsā corroborated him, from Ibn Abī Laylā. So in these two narrations it is from the hadith of Abū Laylā from ʿAlī, and in the others it is from the hadith of his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān from ʿAlī. It is also narrated from Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from ʿAlī; ʿAbd al-Kabīr b. Dīnār and ʿĪsā b. Yazīd narrated it from him. It is said that Abū Isḥāq did not hear it from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, but took it from his son Muḥammad, from al-Minhāl b. ʿAmr, from him.
