✧ We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa' from Nakhl. A man from the Muslims captured a woman of a man from the polytheists. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned homeward, her husband came, having been absent. When he was told the news, he swore that he would not cease until he shed blood among the companions of Muhammad. He went out following the trail of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped at a place and said: 'Who is the man who will guard us this night of ours?' A man from the Muhajirun and a man from the Ansar volunteered, saying: 'We will, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Be at the mouth of the mountain pass.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions had descended to the pass from the valley. When the two men went out to the mouth of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajir: 'Which part of the night do you prefer me to take care of for you, its beginning or its end?' He said: 'Take care of its beginning for me.' He said: So the Muhajir lay down and slept, and the Ansari stood praying. He said: And the husband of the woman came. When he saw the figure of the man, he knew that he was the watchman of the people. He said: So he shot him with an arrow and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and placed it, and remained standing praying. Then he shot him with another arrow and placed it in him. He said: He pulled it out and placed it, and remained standing praying. Then he returned to him a third time and placed it in him. He pulled it out and placed it, then he bowed and prostrated, then he woke his companion, saying: 'Sit up, for I have been wounded.' He jumped up. When the man saw the two of them, he knew that he had been noticed and fled. When the Muhajir saw the blood on the Ansari, he said: 'Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me when he first shot you?' He said: 'I was in a surah I was reciting, and I did not like to cut it off until I completed it. When he kept shooting at me, I bowed and then alerted you. By Allah, had it not been for fear of neglecting the gap I was commanded by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to guard, my soul would have departed before I cut it off or completed it.'
