✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the beginning of his mission while he was in Makkah and was then hiding, and I said: What are you? He said: "I am a prophet." I said: And what is a prophet? He said: "A messenger of Allah." He said: Allah has sent you? He said: "Yes." I said: With what has He sent you? He said: "With that we worship Allah, break the idols, and maintain ties of kinship." I said: Excellent is that with which He has sent you. I said: Who has followed you in this? He said: "A slave and a free man," meaning Abu Bakr and Bilal. 'Amr used to say: I saw myself as a quarter—or the fourth of Islam—so I embraced Islam. He said: Shall I follow you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "No, but rejoin your people, and when you are told that I have left, then follow me." He said: So I rejoined my people and began to await news of him and his departure until a caravan from Yathrib arrived, and I met them and asked them about the news. They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has left Makkah for Madinah. I said: Has he already arrived there? They said: Yes. He said: So I set out until I came to him, and I said: Do you recognize me, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "Yes, you are the man who came to me in Makkah." I then started to wait for an opportunity to be alone with him, and when he was alone, I said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me from what Allah has taught you, for I am ignorant. He said: "Ask about whatever you wish." I said: Which part of the night is most heard? He said: "The depth of the latter part of the night, so pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and recorded until you pray the morning prayer. Then refrain until the sun rises and rises to the height of a spear or two spears, for it rises between the two horns of the devil, and the disbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and recorded until the shadow of a spear is equal to it. Then refrain, for Hell is stoked and its gates are opened. When the sun begins to decline, pray as much as you wish, for the prayer is witnessed and recorded until you pray the afternoon prayer. Then refrain until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of the devil, and the disbelievers prostrate to it. And when you perform wudu', wash your hands, for when you wash your hands, your sins depart from the tips of your fingers. Then when you wash your face, your sins depart from your face. Then when you rinse your mouth and inhale water, your sins depart from your nostrils. Then when you wash your hands, your sins depart from your forearms. Then when you wipe your head, your sins depart from the ends of your hair. Then when you wash your feet, your sins depart from your feet. If you remain in your sitting place, that is your share of your wudu', and if you stand and remember your Lord, praise Him, and perform two rak'ahs with your heart attentive to them, you will be as free of your sins as on the day your mother gave birth to you."
