حَدَّثَنَا عُتْبَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْوَلِيدِ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ، أَنَّ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ شُفَيًّا حَدَّثَهُ:
أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ الْمَدِينَةَ، فَإِذَا هُوَ بِرَجُلٍ قَدِ اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ هَذَا ؟ فَقَالُوا: أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ، فَدَنَوْتُ مِنْهُ حَتَّى قَعَدْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُحَدِّثُ النَّاسَ، فَلَمَّا سَكَتَ وَخَلَا، قُلْتُ: أَنْشُدُكَ بِحَقٍّ وَحَقٍّ لَمَّا حَدَّثْتَنِي حَدِيثًا سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَقَلْتَهُ وَعَلِمْتَهُ، فَقَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: أَفْعَلُ، لَأُحَدِّثَنَّكَ حَدِيثًا حَدَّثَنِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَعَلِمْتُهُ، ثُمَّ نَشَغَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ نَشْغَةً، فَمَكَثَ قَلِيلًا، ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ، فَقَالَ: لَأُحَدِّثَنَّكَ حَدِيثًا حَدَّثَنِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي هَذَا الْبَيْتِ مَا مَعَنَا أَحَدٌ غَيْرِي وَغَيْرُهُ، ثُمَّ نَشَغَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ نَشْغَةً أُخْرَى، فَمَكَثَ بِذَلِكَ، ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ وَمَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ، قَالَ: أَفْعَلُ، لَأُحَدِّثَنَّكَ بِحَدِيثٍ حَدَّثَنِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا وَهُوَ فِي هَذَا الْبَيْتِ مَا مَعَنَا أَحَدٌ غَيْرِي وَغَيْرُهُ، ثُمَّ نَشَغَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ نَشْغَةً شَدِيدَةً، ثُمَّ مَالَ خَارًّا عَلَى وَجْهِهِ، أَسْنَدْتُهُ طَوِيلًا، ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ، فَقَالَ

✧ He entered Madinah and found a man with people gathered around him. He asked, 'Who is this?' They said, 'Abu Hurayrah.' I approached him until I sat before him while he was narrating to the people. When he fell silent and was alone, I said, 'I adjure you by a right and a right to narrate to me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ, which you understood and knew.' Abu Hurayrah said, 'I will do it; I will surely narrate to you a hadith that the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me and that I knew.' Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed once, remained still for a while, then recovered and said, 'I will surely narrate to you a hadith that the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me in this house, with no one with us but me and him.' Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed again, remained still, then recovered and wiped his face. He said, 'I will do it; I will surely narrate to you a hadith that the Messenger of God ﷺ narrated to me while I and he were in this house, with no one with us but me and him.' Then Abu Hurayrah sobbed violently, collapsed on his face, and I supported him for a long time. Then he recovered and said.
