✧ Banū Shabābah, a clan from Fahm, used to give the Messenger of God ﷺ a tenth of their honey, one skin from every ten skins, and he protected two valleys for them. When ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb came, he appointed Sufyān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī over them, but they refused to give him anything, saying: That is something we used to give to the Messenger of God ﷺ. Sufyān wrote to ʿUmar about that, and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ wrote to him: "Bees are only rain-flies that God drives as provision to whom He wills. If they give you what they used to give to the Messenger of God ﷺ, then protect their two valleys for them; otherwise leave the people free between them." So they gave him what they used to give to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he protected their two valleys for them.

  • Shafiʿī

machine translationThe hadith "Indeed, on honey there is the tithe (al-ʿushr)" is weak (ḍaʿīf), and the report that the tithe is not to be taken from it is also weak (ḍaʿīf), except what is from ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translational-Dāraquṭnī said: It is narrated from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith and Ibn Lahīʿah, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, as a connected report (musnad). Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from ʿUmar, as a mursal report. I say: This is its defect (ʿillah), and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and Ibn Lahīʿah are not among the people of precision (itqān).

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationHe considered him weak (ḍaʿīf).

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    machine translationA good (ḥasan) hadith.

machine translationIf the report is authentic, then there is still some doubt in the heart about this chain of transmission (isnād).
