✧ That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him as a zakat collector. His father said: "Do not leave until you have made a covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." When he wanted to leave, he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Qays, do not come on the Day of Resurrection with a camel on your neck that bellows, or a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats, and do not be like Abu Righal." Sa'd said: "And who is Abu Righal?" He said: "A zakat collector whom Salih sent. He found a man in Al-Ta'if with a small flock of sheep, nearly a hundred except for one, with their young; and the man had a small son whose mother had died, and the milk of that one sheep was his livelihood." The owner of the sheep said: "Who are you?" He said: "I am the messenger of the Messenger of God." He welcomed him, and said: "These are my sheep, so take whichever you like." He looked at the milch ewe and said: "This one." The man said: "This boy, as you see, has no food or drink other than it." He said: "If you love milk, I love it too." The man said: "Take two sheep in its place," but he refused. He kept increasing and offering until he offered five sheep in its place, and he refused. When the man saw that, he took his bow and shot him, killing him. Then he said: "It is not fitting that anyone should bring this news to the Messenger of God before me." The owner of the sheep came to Salih the Prophet ﷺ and told him, and Salih said: "O God, curse Abu Righal; O God, curse Abu Righal." Sa'd b. 'Ubadah said: "O Messenger of Allah, exempt Qays from collecting zakat."
