✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ came out in the middle of the night and prayed in the mosque. Some men prayed following his prayer. In the morning, people began to talk about it. On the third night, the people of the mosque increased in number, so he came out and prayed, and they prayed following his prayer. On the fourth night, the mosque could not contain its people, but the Messenger of God ﷺ did not come out to them. Some of the men began calling out, "Prayer!" but he did not come out. The Messenger of God ﷺ stayed inside until he came out for the dawn prayer. When he finished the dawn prayer, he stood up, faced them, pronounced the testimony of faith, praised and extolled God, then said, "Now then, your situation has not been hidden from me, but I feared that the night prayer would be made obligatory upon you and you would be unable to perform it." The Messenger of God ﷺ used to encourage them to stand in prayer during Ramadan without commanding them decisively, saying, "Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ passed away, and the matter remained thus during the caliphate of Abu Bakr and the early part of the caliphate of Umar, until Umar gathered them behind Ubayy b. Ka'b, who led them in prayer. That was the first time people gathered for the night prayer of Ramadan.
