✧ The collective chapters on the new moons and the time of the beginning of the fast of Ramadan

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ السَّعْدِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ - يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ:

الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ لَيْلَةً، فَلَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ، وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُغَمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَإِنْ غُمِّيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدُرُوا لَهُ

Translation

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAlī b. Ḥujr al-Saʿdī
  2. Ismāʿīl / Ibn Jaʿfar
  3. ʿAbdullāh b. Dīnār
  4. Ibn ʿUmar
  5. Rasūl Allāh ﷺ

✧ The month is twenty-nine nights, so do not fast until you see it, and do not break your fast until you see it, unless it is obscured from you. If it is obscured from you, then estimate for it.
