✧ Mu'adh used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then return to his people and lead them in prayer. One night the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the 'Isha' prayer, then Mu'adh returned and led his people. He began with Surah al-Baqarah, so a man stepped aside and prayed alone, then left. They said, 'What is the matter with you, O so-and-so? Have you become a hypocrite?' He said, 'I have not become a hypocrite, and I will certainly go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and inform him!' So he went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Mu'adh prays with you then returns and leads us. Last night you delayed the 'Isha' prayer, then he came and led us, and he began with Surah al-Baqarah. We are people who work with our hands at watering camels!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Are you a troublemaker, O Mu'adh? Recite Surah such-and-such, and Surah such-and-such.' We said to 'Amr: 'Abu al-Zubayr says: "Glorify the name of your Lord [the Most High]" and "By the sky and the night comer"?' He said, 'It is something like that.'

machine translationA established, sound (ṣaḥīḥ) ḥadīth, about whose authenticity there is no disagreement.
machine translationIbn ʿUyaynah narrated this ḥadīth of Jābir from ʿAmr and did not mention this addition. He said: It is possible that this was from the words of Ibn Jurayj, or from the words of ʿAmr, or from the words of Jābir, based on conjecture and personal judgement, not on certainty.
machine translationHe was asked about the ḥadīth of Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh from Muʿādh, that he used to pray with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and then leave and lead his people in that same prayer. He said: ʿAmr b. Dīnār narrates it, and there is disagreement about it from him. Al-Ḥasan b. Abī Jaʿfar narrated it from Ayyūb from ʿAmr from Jābir from Muʿādh, and Muḥammad b. Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī followed him, narrating it from Shuʿbah from ʿAmr from Jābir from Muʿādh. But the students of Shuʿbah and the students of Ayyūb contradicted them both, narrating it from them from ʿAmr from Jābir that Muʿādh [did so]. Likewise Manṣūr b. Zādhān, Warqāʾ and Muḥammad b. Muslim narrated it. The sound (ṣaḥīḥ) version is that it belongs to the musnad of Jābir.
