✧ It was said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb: 'Tell us about the affair of the hour of hardship.' ʿUmar said: 'We set out to Tabūk in intense heat. We stopped at a place where thirst afflicted us until we thought our necks would snap. A man would go searching for water and not return until we thought his neck would snap. A man would slaughter his camel, squeeze its stomach contents, drink it, and put what remained on his liver. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq said: "O Messenger of God, God has accustomed you to good in supplication, so supplicate for us." He said: "Would you like that?" He said: "Yes." He raised his hands and did not lower them until the sky spoke and darkened, then poured down, and they filled what they had with them. Then we went looking and did not find it beyond the army.'
