✧ Aban b. Yazid narrated to us. Abu Bakr said: Abu Hurayrah informs that he witnessed this prayer with the Prophet ﷺ in which this story occurred. So how could this story of Dhu al-Yadayn be before the Prophet's ﷺ prohibition of speaking during prayer? Ibn Mas'ud informs that the Prophet ﷺ informed him upon his return from the land of Abyssinia, when he greeted the Prophet ﷺ, that among what Allah had newly ordained was that they should not speak during prayer. Ibn Mas'ud's return from the land of Abyssinia was before the Battle of Badr, since Ibn Mas'ud had witnessed Badr and claimed that he killed Abu Jahl b. Hisham on that day. I have dictated this story in the book of Jihad. Abu Hurayrah only came to Madinah years after Badr; he came to Madinah while the Prophet ﷺ was at Khaybar, and he had appointed Siba' b. Urfutah al-Ghifari as his deputy over Madinah.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
