✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Khalid b. Sufyan b. Nubayh al-Hudhali, and it had reached him that he was gathering [forces] against him. He was [heading toward] 'Uranah and 'Arafat. He said to me: "Go and kill him." I said: O Messenger of Allah, describe him to me. He said: "When you see him, you will get goosebumps. It is enough for you that I describe nothing else of him to you." He was a hairy, shaggy man. I set out until when I drew near him, the prayer time came, the 'Asr prayer. I said to myself: I fear that if I delay the prayer, something may happen between me and him, so I prayed while walking, gesturing toward him. Then I reached him, and by Allah, as soon as I saw him I got goosebumps. He was among his womenfolk in his howdahs. I walked with him, and he said: Who are you? I said: A man from the Arabs; I heard that you are gathering [forces] against this man, so I came to you about that. He said: I am indeed doing that. I said to myself: You will soon know. I walked with him for a while until I could overpower him, then I struck him with my sword until he became still. Then I came to Madinah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of the news, and he gave me a mikhsar—meaning a staff. I left his presence with it, and my companions said to me: What is this that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave you? I said: A mikhsar. They said: What will you do with it? Why didn't you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ why he gave it to you and what you should do with it? Go back to him and ask him. So I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allah, why did you give me the mikhsar? He said: "It will be between me and you on the Day of Resurrection, and the fewest people on that day will be those who carry such staffs." He hung it on his sword and it never left him as long as he lived. When death came to him, he instructed us to bury it with him, and by Allah, it was placed in his shroud.
