The idols among the people of Noah
Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: The Banū Milkān b. Kinānah b. Khuzaymah b. Mudrikah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar had an idol called Saʿd, a tall rock in a desert tract of their land. A man of the Banū Milkān came with camels of his that were untrained for riding [muʾabbala] to make them stand before it, seeking its blessing, as he claimed. When the camels saw it—they had been pastured and not ridden, and blood used to be poured over it—they shied away from it and went off in every direction. Their owner, the Milkānī, became angry, took a stone, and threw it at the idol, then said: “May God not bless you! You have frightened my camels away from me.” Then he went out in search of them until he gathered them together. When they were gathered for him, he said: We came to Saʿd that he might unite us, But Saʿd dispersed us, so we are not of Saʿd. Is Saʿd anything but a rock in a desert waste Of the earth, not calling to error or to right?
