The slaying of Ḥamzah
Translation
✧ [The killing of Ḥamzah] Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib fought until he killed Arṭāh b. ʿAbd Shuraḥbīl b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār, who was one of the group carrying the banner. Then Sibāʿ b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-Ghubshānī, who was nicknamed Abū Niyār, passed by him. Ḥamzah said to him: “Come to me, O son of the cutter of clitorises”—his mother was Umm Anmār, the client of Sharīq b. ʿAmr b. Wahb al-Thaqafī. (Ibn Hishām said: Sharīq b. al-Akhnas b. Sharīq.) She was a female circumciser in Makkah. When they met, Ḥamzah struck him and killed him. Waḥshī, the slave of Jubayr b. Muṭʿim, said: By God, I was looking at Ḥamzah as he cut down the people with his sword, sparing nothing, like a dusty-colored camel, when Sibāʿ b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā went ahead of me toward him. Ḥamzah said to him: “Come to me, O son of the cutter of clitorises,” and struck him a blow that seemed to miss his head. I shook my javelin until I was satisfied with it, then hurled it at him. It struck him in the groin and came out between his legs. He came toward me, but was overcome and fell. I gave him time until he died, then went and took my javelin and withdrew to the camp. I had no need of anything but that.
