Translation
✧ [Poetry of Hind bint Uthathah] Ibn Ishaq said: Hind bint Uthathah b. ʿAbbād b. al-Muṭṭalib said, lamenting ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Muṭṭalib: Al-Ṣafrāʾ has been made to contain glory and sovereignty, And a genuine forbearance, abundant in intellect and reason. ʿUbaydah — weep for him for the sake of guests in a strange land, And a widow who falls toward a disheveled one like a palm trunk. And weep for him for the sake of the people in every winter, When the horizons of the sky redden from drought. And weep for him for the sake of the orphans, while the wind is violent, And the cauldron’s kindling — how often it foamed and boiled. If the fires have come to morning with their light dead, He used to kindle them with abundant firewood. For a night comer, or for one seeking hospitality, Or for one whose barking is heard, who came to him at ease. Ibn Hisham said: Most of the people of knowledge in poetry deny this poem as being by Hind.
