The revelation of Sūrat al-Anfāl
نُزُولُ سُورَةِ الْأَنْفَالِ [ مَا نَزَلَ فِي تَقْسِيمِ الْأَنْفَالِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَلَمَّا انْقَضَى أَمْرُ بَدْرٍ، أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِيهِ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ الْأَنْفَالَ بِأَسْرِهَا، فَكَانَ مِمَّا نَزَلَ مِنْهَا فِي اخْتِلَافِهِمْ فِي النَّفَلِ حِينَ اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ: يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنْفَالِ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَصْلِحُوا ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ فَكَانَ عُبَادَةُ بْنُ الصَّامِتِ - فِيمَا بَلَغَنِي - إذَا سُئِلَ عَنْ الْأَنْفَالِ، قَالَ: فِينَا مَعْشَرَ أَهْلِ بَدْرٍ نَزَلَتْ، حِينَ اخْتَلَفْنَا فِي النَّفَلِ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، فَانْتَزَعَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ أَيْدِينَا حِينَ سَاءَتْ فِيهِ أَخْلَاقُنَا، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَقَسَمَهُ بَيْنَنَا عَنْ بَوَاءٍ - يَقُولُ: عَلَى السَّوَاءِ - وَكَانَ فِي ذَلِكَ تَقْوَى اللَّهِ وَطَاعَتُهُ، وَطَاعَةُ رَسُولِهِ ﷺ، وَصَلَاحُ ذَاتِ الْبَيْنِ.
Translation
✧ The revelation of Sūrat al-Anfāl [what was sent down regarding the division of the spoils] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the affair of Badr was concluded, God, mighty and glorious is He, sent down concerning it from the Qurʾān all of Sūrat al-Anfāl. Part of what was sent down of it concerning their disagreement over the spoil, when they disagreed about it, was: “They ask you about the spoils. Say: The spoils belong to God and the Messenger. So fear God and set right that which is between you, and obey God and His Messenger, if you are believers.” ʿUbādah b. al-Ṣāmit—as I have been told—when asked about the spoils, said: It was sent down concerning us, the people of Badr, when we disagreed over the spoil on the day of Badr. God took it from our hands when our conduct over it became evil, and returned it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he divided it among us equally—he says: upon equality. In that was fear of God and obedience to Him, and obedience to His Messenger ﷺ, and setting right what is between us.
