Translation

✧ [Poetry by Ḥassān boasting of his people and of Iblīs's delusion of Quraysh] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit said: My people are those who sheltered their Prophet and believed him, while the people of the earth were disbelievers— except the elect of peoples who were a precedent for the righteous, together with the Anṣār— Anṣār rejoicing in God's allotment; their word when the noble of origin came to them, the chosen one: "Welcome and ease!" So in security and in abundance—excellent the Prophet, excellent the allotment and the neighbor. They lodged him in an abode where no one who was their neighbor feared; an abode that is the abode. And they shared with him their wealth when they came as emigrants; and the share of the denier is the Fire. We journeyed and they journeyed to Badr at their appointed time; had they known with certain knowledge, they would not have journeyed. He deluded them with deception, then abandoned them; surely the wicked one is a deceiver to those who befriend him. He said: "I am your protector," then led them to the worst of watering-places, in which are disgrace and shame. Then we met, and they turned away from their chiefs—some saved, and of them a party perished. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me his line: "when the noble of origin came to them, the chosen one."
