The Number of the Muslims' Camels

[ عَدَدُ إبِلِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَكَانَتْ إبِلُ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَوْمَئِذٍ سَبْعِينَ بَعِيرًا، فَاعْتَقَبُوهَا، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، وَمَرْثَدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ يَعْتَقِبُونَ بَعِيرًا، وَكَانَ حَمْزَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، وَزَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ، وَأَبُو كَبْشَةَ، وَأَنَسَةُ، مَوْلَيَا رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَعْتَقِبُونَ بَعِيرًا، وَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرُ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ يَعْتَقِبُونَ بَعِيرًا. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَجَعَلَ عَلَى السَّاقَةِ قَيْسَ بْنَ أَبِي صَعْصَعَةَ أَخَا بَنِي مَازِنِ بْنِ النَّجَّارِ. وَكَانَتْ رَايَةُ الْأَنْصَارِ مَعَ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ، فِيمَا قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ

Translation

✧ [The number of the Muslims' camels] Ibn Isḥāq said: The camels of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ on that day were seventy camels, which they rode in turns. The Messenger of God ﷺ, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and Marthad b. Abī Marthad al-Ghanawī took turns on one camel. Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Zayd b. Ḥārithah, Abū Kabshah, and Anasah, the two freedmen of the Messenger of God ﷺ, took turns on one camel. Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf took turns on one camel. Ibn Isḥāq said: He placed Qays b. Abī Ṣaʿṣaʿah, the brother of the Banū Māzin b. al-Najjār, in command of the rear guard. The banner of the Anṣār was with Saʿd b. Muʿādh, according to what Ibn Hishām said.
