The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation
Translation
✧ [What was sent down of the Qur'an in explanation of the signs of Jesus ﷺ ] Then He informed her of what He willed for him, saying: And He will teach him the Book and wisdom, and the Torah which was among them from the time of Moses before him, and the Gospel, another Book which God, mighty and glorious is He, brought anew to him, which they did not have except mention of it that it was to be from the prophets after him; and a messenger to the Children of Israel: "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord," i.e., by which He confirms my prophethood, that I am a messenger from Him to you: "I create for you out of clay the likeness of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by God's permission," the God who sent me to you, and He is my Lord and your Lord; "and I heal the blind and the leper." [Ibn Hisham's explanation of some rare words] Ibn Hisham said: al-akmah is the one born blind. Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: "I shouted and it turned back like the turning back of the akmah" (its plural is kumh). Ibn Hisham said: harrajtu means I shouted at the lion and raised a clamour against it. This verse is in a poem of his. "And I bring the dead to life by God's permission, and I tell you what you eat and what you store up in your houses. Surely in that is a sign for you that I am the messenger of God from God to you, if you are believers. And confirming what is before me of the Torah," i.e., confirming what preceded me concerning it, "and to make lawful for you some of that which was forbidden to you," i.e., I inform you that it had been forbidden to you, and you abandoned it, then I make it lawful for you as a lightening for you, so you attain its ease and exit from its liabilities. "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord; so fear God and obey me. Surely God is my Lord and your Lord," i.e., a disavowal of those who say what they say about him, and an argument for his Lord against them; "so worship Him; this is a straight path," i.e., this is what I have carried you upon and come to you with. When Jesus sensed disbelief from them and aggression against him, he said: "Who are my helpers unto God?" The disciples said: "We are God's helpers; we believe in God," this is their saying by which they attained the bounty from their Lord; "and bear witness that we are Muslims," not what these people say who dispute with you about him: "Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down, and we have followed the messenger; so write us down with the witnesses," i.e., thus was their saying and their faith.
