What was revealed concerning their intention to believe in the morning and disbelieve in the evening

Translation

✧ [ What was revealed concerning what some of them intended of faith in the morning and disbelief in the evening ] And ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣayf, ʿAdī b. Zayd, and al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf said to one another: Come, let us believe in what was sent down upon Muḥammad and his companions in the morning, and disbelieve in it in the evening, so that we may confuse their religion for them; perhaps they will do as we do and turn back from their religion. So God, exalted is He, sent down concerning them: O People of the Scripture, why do you clothe the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know? And a faction of the People of the Scripture said: Believe in what was sent down upon those who believe at the beginning of the day, and disbelieve at its end, so that they may turn back. And do not believe except in one who follows your religion. Say: Indeed, guidance is the guidance of God—that anyone should be given the like of what you were given, or that they should dispute with you before your Lord. Say: Indeed, bounty is in the hand of God; He gives it to whom He wills. And God is all-encompassing, all-knowing.
