The story of the Messenger ﷺ with Abū Bakr in the cave
Translation
✧ [The two sons of Abū Bakr and Ibn Fuhayrah attending to the needs of the Messenger and his companion while they were in the cave] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in the cave for three nights, and Abū Bakr was with him. When Quraysh missed him, they offered a hundred camels for anyone who brought him back to them. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr would spend his days among Quraysh, listening to what they were plotting and what they said concerning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr; then he would come to the two of them when evening fell and tell them the news. ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah, the mawlā of Abū Bakr ؓ, would graze among the flocks of the people of Makkah, and when evening fell he would bring Abū Bakr's sheep to the two of them, and they would milk and slaughter. When ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr left them in the morning for Makkah, ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah would follow his tracks with the sheep until he had effaced them. When the three nights had passed and the people had calmed down concerning them, their companion whom they had hired with their two camels and a camel of his own came to them, and Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr ؓ brought them their travelling provisions. She had forgotten to make a strap for them, and when they departed she went to hang up the provision bag, but it had no strap; so she undid her girdle and made it a strap, then hung it with it. [The reason Asmāʾ was called Dhāt al-Niṭāq] For that reason Asmāʾ bt. Abī Bakr was called Dhāt al-Niṭāq. Ibn Hishām said: I heard more than one of the people of knowledge say: Dhāt al-Niṭāqayn. Its explanation is that when she wanted to hang up the provision bag, she split her girdle in two: she hung the bag with one part and girded herself with the other. [Abū Bakr offers a riding camel to the Messenger ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Abū Bakr ؓ brought the two riding camels near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he presented the better of the two to him, then said: Mount, may my father and mother be your ransom. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I will not ride a camel that is not mine. He said: It is yours, O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom. He said: No, but what was the price for which you bought it? He said: Such-and-such. He said: I have taken it for that price. He said: It is yours, O Messenger of Allah. So they mounted and departed, and Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ seated ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah, his mawlā, behind him to serve them on the way.
