The history of the nasiʾ among the Arabs

Translation

✧ [The history of nas’ among the Arabs] Ibn Isḥāq said: The first to intercalate the months among the Arabs, by which they made lawful of them what was made lawful and made unlawful of them what was made unlawful, was al-Qalammas, who is Ḥudhayfah b. ʿAbd b. Fuqaym b. ʿAdī b. ʿĀmir b. Thaʿlabah b. al-Ḥārith b. Mālik b. Kinānah b. Khuzaymah. Then after him his son ʿAbbād b. Ḥudhayfah stood over that. Then after ʿAbbād stood Qalaʿ b. ʿAbbād. Then after Qalaʿ stood Umayyah b. Qalaʿ. Then after Umayyah stood ʿAwf b. Umayyah. Then after ʿAwf stood Abū Thumāmah Junādah b. ʿAwf, and he was the last of them, and upon him Islam arose. When the Arabs finished their pilgrimage, they would gather to him, and he would declare the four sacred months sacred: Rajab, Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and al-Muḥarram. If he wanted to make lawful something of them, he made al-Muḥarram lawful, so they made it lawful, and he made Ṣafar sacred in its place, so they made it sacred, in order to keep the number of the four sacred months. When they wanted to depart, he would stand among them and say: O God, I have made lawful for You one of the two Ṣafars, the first Ṣafar, and I have postponed the other for the coming year. About that ʿUmayr b. Qays (Jidhl al-Ṭaʿʿān), one of the Banū Firās b. Ghunm (b. Thaʿlabah) b. Mālik b. Kinānah, said, boasting of the intercalators over the Arabs: Maʿadd has known that my people are the noblest of people, that they have nobility. So which of the people can surpass us in vengeance, and which of the people have we not bridled with a bit? Are we not the intercalators over Maʿadd, making the months of the profane sacred? Ibn Hishām said: The first of the sacred months is al-Muḥarram.
