Translation

✧ [The reason for the revelation of the surah “Say: O disbelievers”] The Messenger of God ﷺ—while he was circumambulating the Kaaba, as has reached me—was intercepted by al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, Umayyah b. Khalaf, and al-ʿĀṣ b. Wāʾil al-Sahmī, who were elders among their people. They said, “O Muḥammad, come, let us worship what you worship, and you worship what we worship, so that we and you share together in the matter. If what you worship is better than what we worship, we will have taken our share of it; and if what we worship is better than what you worship, you will have taken your share of it.” Then God, exalted be He, revealed concerning them: “Say: O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship, nor are you worshippers of what I worship, nor am I a worshipper of what you have worshipped, nor are you worshippers of what I worship. To you your religion, and to me my religion.” That is, if you do not worship except God, except that I worship what you worship, then I have no need of that from you. To you your religion entirely, and to me my religion.
