Sirat Ibn Hisham 347
Translation
✧ The first to proclaim the Qur’an aloud [ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd and what befell him from Quraysh on account of his proclaiming the Qur’an aloud]. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr narrated to me from his father, who said: The first to proclaim the Qur’an aloud after the Messenger of God ﷺ in Makkah was ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd ؓ. He said: One day the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ gathered and said: By God, Quraysh have never heard this Qur’an recited aloud to them, so who is a man who can make them hear it? ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd said: I. They said: We fear them for you; we want a man who has a clan to protect him from the people if they wish him harm. He said: Leave me alone, for God will protect me. He said: So Ibn Masʿūd went out early until he came to the Maqām in the forenoon, while Quraysh were in their assemblies, until he stood at the Maqām, then recited: In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate, raising his voice with it: The Merciful, He taught the Qur’an. He said: Then he turned to face them reciting it. He said: They looked at him and began saying: What did Ibn Umm ʿAbd say? He said: Then they said: He is reciting some of what Muḥammad has brought. So they rose up against him and began striking him in the face, while he continued reciting until he had reached of it what God willed that he reach. Then he went back to his Companions, and they had left marks on his face. They said to him: This is what we feared for you. He said: God’s enemies were never more insignificant to me than they are now, and if you wish I will confront them with the like of it tomorrow. They said: No, it is enough for you; you have made them hear what they dislike.
