What God revealed concerning the story of the Companions of the Cave

Translation

✧ [The Question of the Jews of Madinah to the Messenger ﷺ about the Meaning of His Saying, Most High: “And you were not given of knowledge except a little”] Ibn Isḥāq said: And I was told on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās that he said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ arrived in Madinah, the rabbis of the Jews said: “O Muḥammad, do you see your saying: ‘And you were not given of knowledge except a little’—do you mean us or your people?” He said: “Both.” They said: “But you recite in what has come to you that we have been given the Torah, in which is an exposition of everything.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “It is little in God’s knowledge, and with you there is in it what suffices you if you would act upon it.” He said: Then God Most High sent down upon him, concerning what they asked him about regarding that: “And if all the trees on the earth were pens, and the sea, with seven more seas after it to replenish it, were ink, the words of God would not be exhausted. Truly God is Mighty, Wise” (Q 31:27)—that is, the Torah is, in this, little of God’s knowledge.
