What God revealed concerning the story of the Companions of the Cave
Translation
✧ “These, our people, have taken gods besides Him; why do they not bring concerning them a clear authority?” Ibn Isḥāq said: i.e., a decisive proof. “And who is more unjust than one who fabricates a lie against God? And when you have withdrawn from them and what they worship besides God, take refuge in the Cave; your Lord will spread for you of His mercy, and prepare for you from your affair a comfort. And you see the sun when it rises, turning away from their Cave to the right, and when it sets, passing them by to the left, while they are in an open space within it.” Ibn Hishām said: “turning away” (tazāwaru) means “inclining,” and it is from “al-zawr” (inclination). Imruʾ al-Qays b. Ḥajar said: “And I am a guarantor, if I return with kingship, with a journey from which you see the guide-post inclined.” This verse is in a poem of his. And Abū al-Zaḥf al-Kalbī said, describing a country: “A place of assembly, deviating from our desire, whose grueling five-day journey exhausts the riding camels.” These two verses are in a rajz poem of his. “And it passes them by to the left” (taqriḍuhum dhāt al-shimāl): it passes beyond them and leaves them on its left. Dhū al-Rumma said: “To women in litters who cut across the mountain terraces of Mushrif to the left, while to their right are the horsemen.” This verse is in a poem of his. “The open space” (al-fajwa): the wide expanse, and its plural is “al-fijāʾ.” A poet said: “You clothed your people with disgrace and shame until they were exposed and left the open space of the abode.”
