What ʿUtbah advised his companions
Translation
✧ [What ʿUtbah advised his companions] So ʿUtbah arose and went to his companions, and some of them said to one another: We swear by God, Abū al-Walīd has come back to you with a different countenance than the one with which he departed. When he sat down with them, they said: What is behind you, O Abū al-Walīd? He said: Behind me is that I have heard a speech; by God, I have never heard the like of it. By God, it is not poetry, nor sorcery, nor soothsaying. O company of Quraysh, obey me and leave the matter to me: leave this man and what he is about, and keep apart from him. For by God, his speech which I heard will have a great consequence. If the Arabs strike him down, then you have been spared him by others; but if he prevails over the Arabs, then his sovereignty is your sovereignty, and his might is your might, and you will be the happiest of people through him. They said: By God, he has bewitched you, O Abū al-Walīd, with his tongue. He said: This is my opinion about him; so do whatever seems right to you.
