Dhū Nuwās and the digging of the trench

Translation

✧ [Dhū Nuwās and the digging of the trench] So Dhū Nuwās marched against them with his armies, and he summoned them to Judaism, giving them the choice between that and death. They chose death, so he dug for them the trench, and he burned with fire those whom he burned, and killed with the sword, and mutilated, until he had killed nearly twenty thousand of them. It was concerning Dhū Nuwās and his army that God Most High revealed to His Messenger, our master Muḥammad ﷺ: Slain were the companions of the trench, the fire abounding in fuel, when they sat over it and were witnesses of what they did to the believers. They took revenge on them only because they believed in God, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy. [The trench linguistically] Ibn Hishām said: Al-ukhdūd is the elongated excavation in the ground, like a moat, a streamlet, and such like, and its plural is akhādīd. Dhū al-Rummah, whose name is Ghaylān b. ʿUqbah, one of the Banū ʿAdī b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Udd b. Ṭānikhah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar, said: Of the Iraqi she-camels for which a trench lies between the desert and the palms—meaning a streamlet. And this verse is in a poem of his. He said: And the mark of a sword or knife on skin, and the mark of a whip and the like, is called an ukhdūd, and its plural is akhādīd.
