Poetry of Abū Ṭālib in praise of his people for their support of him

Translation

✧ [Poetry of Abū Ṭālib in praise of his people for their affection toward him] When Abū Ṭālib saw from his people what pleased him in their striving alongside him, and their affection toward him, he began praising them and recalling their ancient virtue, and recalling the merit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among them, and his standing with them, to strengthen their resolve, and so that they would show affection with him in his affair. He said: When one day Quraysh gather for boasting, ʿAbd Manāf is its heart and its core. And if the nobles of its ʿAbd Manāf are reckoned, then in Hāshim are its nobles and its ancient ones. And if one day they boast, then Muḥammad is the chosen one of its heart and its noble one. Quraysh called one another, its lean and its fat, against us, yet did not prevail, and their forbearance ran wild. We were of old such that we would not countenance an injustice; when they turned aside the cheeks of the proud, we would straighten them. We protect its sanctuary every day of calamity, and we strike from its stones whoever seeks them. Through us the withered branch revived, and only in our shelter do its roots become moist and grow.
