Translation

✧ Mention of Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh, ʿUthmān b. al-Ḥuwayrith, and Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl [Their Inquiry into Religions] Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh gathered one day at a festival of theirs, by one of their idols which they used to venerate, to which they slaughtered sacrifices, before which they kept vigil, and around which they circumambulated. That was a festival of theirs, one day every year. Four men withdrew from them in secret, then they said to one another: Be truthful to one another, and let each of you keep the matter secret from the others. They said: Yes. They were: Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy; ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb b. Yaʿmur b. Ṣabrah b. Murrah b. Kabīr b. Ghanm b. Dūdān b. Asad b. Khuzaymah, whose mother was Umaymah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib; ʿUthmān b. al-Ḥuwayrith b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy; and Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qurṭ b. Riyāḥ b. Razāḥ b. ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy. They said to one another: Know, by God, that your people are upon nothing; they have erred from the religion of their father Ibrāhīm. What is a stone that we circumambulate, that does not hear, does not see, does not harm, and does not benefit? O people, seek for yourselves a religion, for by God, you are upon nothing. So they dispersed throughout the lands seeking the ḥanīfiyyah, the religion of Ibrāhīm. [What Waraqah and Ibn Jaḥsh Attained] As for Waraqah b. Nawfal, he became firmly established in Christianity, and he followed the scriptures from its people, until he acquired knowledge from the People of the Book. As for ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh, he remained in his state of confusion until he embraced Islam; then he emigrated with the Muslims to Abyssinia, accompanied by his wife Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān, who was a Muslim. When he arrived there, he became a Christian, abandoned Islam, and remained so until he died there as a Christian.
