Account of the wells of the clans of Quraysh in Makkah

ذِكْرُ بِئَارِ قَبَائِلِ قُرَيْشٍ بِمَكَّةَ [ الطَّوِيُّ وَمَنْ حَفَرَهَا ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَكَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ قَبْلَ حَفْرِ زَمْزَمَ قَدْ احْتَفَرَتْ بِئَارًا بِمَكَّةَ، فِيمَا حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْبَكَّائِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إسْحَاقَ، قَالَ: حَفَرَ عَبْدُ شَمْسِ بْنُ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ الطَّوِيَّ، وهي الْبِئْرُ الَّتِي بِأَعْلَى مَكَّةَ عِنْدَ الْبَيْضَاءِ، دَارُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ( الثَّقَفِيُّ ).

Translation

✧ Mention of the wells of the clans of Quraysh in Makkah [al-Ṭawiyy and who dug it] Ibn Hishām said: Quraysh, before the digging of Zamzam, had dug wells in Makkah, according to what Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bakkāʾī narrated to us from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, who said: ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf dug al-Ṭawiyy, which is the well at the upper part of Makkah near al-Bayḍāʾ, the house of Muḥammad b. Yūsuf (al-Thaqafī).
