His marriage to Juwayriyah

Translation

✧ [His marriage to Juwayriyah] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār al-Khuzāʿiyyah. She was among the captives of the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq of Khuzāʿah, and she fell to the lot of Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās al-Anṣārī. He made a written contract with her for her ransom. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to seek his help in her contract. He said to her: “Would you like something better than that?” She said: “And what is it?” He said: “I will pay your contract and marry you.” She said: “Yes.” So he married her. Ibn Hishām said: This ḥadīth was related to us by Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bakkāʾī, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned back from the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, and with him was Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith, and he was at Dhāt al-Jaysh, he entrusted Juwayriyah to a man of the Anṣār as a deposit, and he ordered him to guard her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah. Then her father al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār came with the ransom of his daughter. When he was at al-ʿAqīq, he looked at the camels which he had brought for the ransom, and he desired two camels from among them, so he hid them in a ravine of the ravines of al-ʿAqīq. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Muḥammad, you have captured my daughter, and this is her ransom.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Where are the two camels which you hid at al-ʿAqīq in such-and-such a ravine?” Al-Ḥārith said: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless you. By Allah, no one has seen that except Allah Almighty.” So al-Ḥārith embraced Islam, and with him two of his sons and people of his tribe embraced Islam. He sent for the two camels, and he brought them. Then he handed the camels to the Prophet ﷺ, and his daughter Juwayriyah was handed to him. She embraced Islam, and her Islam was good. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her father for her hand in marriage, and he married her to him, and he gave her a dowry of four hundred dirhams. She had been, before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with a cousin of hers called ʿAbd Allāh. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought her from Thābit b. Qays, then he freed her and married her, and he gave her a dowry of four hundred dirhams.
