The conversion of Farwah b. ʿAmr al-Judhāmī

Translation

✧ The Islam of Farwah b. ʿAmr al-Judhāmī [His Islam] Ibn Isḥāq said: Farwah b. ʿAmr al-Nāfirah al-Judhāmī, then al-Nufāthī, sent a messenger to the Messenger of God ﷺ with his Islam, and he gifted him a white mule. Farwah was a governor for the Byzantines over the Arabs who were adjacent to them, and his dwelling was Muʿān and what surrounds it in the land of Syria. [The Byzantines' imprisonment of him and his poetry in his prison] When that news of his Islam reached the Byzantines, they sought him until they seized him, and they imprisoned him among them. He said in that prison of his: Sulaymā came to visit at night my companions while the Byzantines were between the gate and al-Qirwān. The phantom turned away, and what it saw grieved it, and I resolved to sleep, though it had made me weep. Do not anoint the eye with antimony after me, Salmā, and do not draw near to coming. You have known, Abā Kubayshah, that I am among the mighty, my tongue is not curbed. If I perish, you will surely miss your brother, and if I remain, you will surely know my station. I have gathered the most excellent of what a young man gathers of generosity, courage, and eloquence. When the Byzantines resolved to crucify him at a water of theirs called ʿAfrāʾ in Palestine, he said: Has news come to Salmā that her husband is at the water of ʿAfrā, above one of the mounts, upon a she-camel whose mother no stallion mounted, her limbs pruned by sickles. [His killing] Al-Zuhrī, Ibn Shihāb, claimed that when they brought him forward to kill him, he said: Convey to the nobles of the Muslims that I am at peace with my Lord, my bones and my standing. Then they struck his neck and crucified him at that water, may God Almighty have mercy on him.
