Translation

✧ [The poetry of Labīd in mourning Arbad] Ibn Isḥāq said: Labīd said, mourning Arbad: Fate does not pass over anyone, neither a compassionate father nor a child. I fear death for Arbad, and I dread the rising of Simāk and Asad. O eye, why did you not weep for Arbad when we arose and the women arose in grief? If they make trouble, he cares not for their trouble; if they act justly in judgment, he is just. Sweet and wise, and in his sweetness there is bitterness, delicate of inward parts and liver. O eye, why did you not weep for Arbad when the winds of winter twisted the ʿaḍad trees? They became pregnant and cut off until the remnants of the spans were laid bare. Braver than a lion of the thicket, fleshy, possessed of ambition in high matters and blame. The eye does not attain all its ambition on a night when steeds become like strips of hide. He who stirs up wailing in his mourning assemblies, like firstborn gazelles upon the bare ground. The lightning and thunderbolts bereaved me of the horseman on the day of hardship, the noble one. And the plunderer who restores the plundered one when he comes defeated; and if he returns, he returns. He pardons despite hardship and asking, as the rain of spring with watchful clouds makes grow. All the sons of a free woman, their end is paucity, even if they are many in number. If they are envied, they fall; and if they are commanded one day, they are for destruction and exhaustion. Ibn Hishām said: His verse 'wa-l-ḥāribi l-jābiri l-ḥarībi' is from Abū ʿUbaydah, and his verse 'yaʿfū ʿalā l-jahdi' is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
